Working group 3 (“Designing Public Argumentation and Policymaking”) of the European Network for Argumentation and Public Policy Analysis (COST Action CA17132 – APPLY; https://publicpolicyargument.eu/) is pleased to organize this meeting on how argument technologies can help improving the quality of public debate and how a design perspective is needed to achieve such aim. The meeting will include contributions regarding:

– Software tools for scaffolding debate on controversial issues

– Argument diagramming and public debate

– How to match available argument-based apps / platforms with the various needs of different stakeholders in public debate

– The role of argumentation in dealing with online disinformation

– Argumentation and virality: how to leverage the latter to improve the former

– Digital tools for critical thinking education and debate training

 

Format

Presentations will be 35-40 minutes long, with 15-20 minutes for discussion after each talk. The meeting will include a presentation of the activities of the Center of Data Science and Complexity for Society at Sapienza University of Rome (https://cdcs.di.uniroma1.it/index.php), and of the Data Lab at LUISS University, Rome (https://datalab.luiss.it/), as well as a panel discussion about the continuation of the work of WG3 within the APPLY Cost Action.
Participation is by invitations only, based on the selection made by WG3 leaders and funding availability. There are no fees.

Note: A Management Committee meeting (MCM) is held on Wednesday, Sept 29, 10:00-12:00 AM, linked remotely to two meetings in Lugano, Switzerland, and Madrid, Spain. MC members automatically receive invitations via the COST e-system.
